Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao (Holland Village)

As one of our readers suggested for our team to try out this particular buffet, we took on his suggestion and we did not regret our decision!

Today our blog post is all about Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao (Holland Village). If you are a Xiao Long Bao and a steamboat buffet person, you definitely can't afford to miss out this!

Layout of second floor dining

The second floor is only catered to the steamboat buffet guests. Although there are limited space, the floor does feature like a traditional Chinese restaurant where the close ambience is needed.

Sze Chuan Soup and Pig Bone Broth
Our Steamboat with all the "Goodies"
The restaurant features a order basis, unlike other steamboats buffet whereby customers have to gather the ingredients they need. The portion of the ingredients they gave depends on the number of pax on the table. In no time, we have already filled our soup with all the goodies!

The buffet has 3 types of seating, and the pricing is as follows:

5pm - 7.30pm
(Weekday: $22.80 for adults, $16.80 for children; Weekends/PH: $24.80 (adults), $18.80 (children)

7.45 - 10pm

For the above price you pay, you get to enjoy the fresh meats available, free 100g of tiger prawns per guest, all you can eat xiao long bao, fishballs, and even sliced beef and pig intestines and so much more!

The Famous Xiao Long Bao
Xiao Long Bao is a type of soupy dumpling, inside is filled with pork meat, the soup all held by a thin layer of skin. This is best to be eaten in whole, ensuring that the soup, meat and the skin is consumed at the same time! With the endless flow of Xiao Long Baos, customers can be assured to order at least 5-7 baskets of it without feeling the hole in the pocket!

Let the pictures do the blogging instead!

Sliced Beef

Tiger Prawns, Seaweed, Corn and Fried Tofu
Steamed BBQ Pork Bun
Pig's Liver
Mountains of Food waiting to be cooked
Conclusion
Reservations are highly recommended here. If you are thinking of walk-in for steamboat buffet, you are not getting those xiao long baos in your stomach today. Call the number at the end of our post to make your booking today! (At least 2-3 days, bookings are filling up fast!)

The overall service and standards were quite acceptable, just that the serving of food is slower.
The freshness and preparation of food served is applauding. The sliced beef is done nicely, ensuring the thin layer of meat for ease of cooking. The tiger prawns are skewed properly, allowing the guest to consume it easily.

Regardless of which seating you paid for, I personally think it is very worthwhile. Xiao Long Baos you find outside is priced quite high invidividually. Here at Crystal Jade La Mian Xiao Long Bao is unlimited supply? Whats more to say?

Ah Chew's Desserts

Dessert has been always been a sweet tooth for all of us. With today's post, we are introducing chinese style desserts. Ah Chew's Desserts has been in operation for many years and has successfully attracted many satisfied loyal customers since.

Foody Galore team has decided to experience first hand what their magic trick lies to capture the stomachs of the customers.

Ah Chew Desserts Signboard
Yellow Menu Tags
Layout of the store

The ambience of the store is a very traditional type of dessert shop you might find in Hong Kong or Taipei. With the yellow tag menu, chinese paintings on walls and the hardwood furniture, it really makes one feels that he/she is overseas enjoying delicious desserts.

Mango Sago with Pomelo
This particular dessert is one of favourited among customers. The mango and pomelo are freshly picked and cut from the chiller, on top of it were a layer of coconut milk to enhance the taste and fragrance of the dish. The freshness and sweetness of the mango chunks combined with the burst of the pomelo which neutralises the oversweetness of the mango with its slight sourness, what is more to say?

Mango Sago with Pomelo and an additional Mango Ice Cream!
With the above description of the normal mango sago with pomelo, those with sweet tooth can further add a ice cream of their choice (mango, cookies and cream, yam and others). The ice cream will seep into the dessert, making it an ultimate combination of what is heaven and earth.
A beautiful decorated Pulot Hitam

The beautifully well decorated Pulot Hitam with a pinch of almond flakes makes you feel in a dilemma. The delimma of savouring the beautifully designed Pulot Hitam. The effort and skill that are used to enhance this particular dessert should be applauded. One of the main selling points of a good dish is their appearance and design, in which this dish holds which capture the hearts of many.

Steamed Egg
The Steamed Egg comes in either warm or cold style. We tried the warm version so as we can better taste the texture and the freshness. It is different from the Japanese steamed egg: Chawanmushi. The importance of steamed egg is that it does not have a sour smell and that it is not too filling which allows the stomach to disgest better.

Conclusion
Ah Chew desserts offers a variety of local desserts which is suitable even for tourists. The pricing is not very high for such good quality desserts. It is affordable, and during the lunch hour, be prepared to give up your seats once you're done. It is a small shop and with the crowd coming, you cannot really stay and catch up with your friends as it is not a hang-out place. However, the service is quite efficient and your desserts are being prepared after your order is being taken.

Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice & Seafood Restaurant

So our foody galore team went in search of good chicken rice this time round!!
And this is what we found!!

Situated opposite Novena Church and within walking distance from Novena MRT, Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice is always crowded with people during dinner time, a great place for Chicken Rice & ZiChar with very positive reviews, we decided to stop by for a meal and this is what we found!!

We decided for this visit, we wanted to try Singaporeans all time favourite - Chicken rice.
We ordered a mixture of roasted and steam chicken only.

Roasted and Steam chicken
The roasted chicken was not rice but instead very tender and most of its moisture was still kept in, thus it was juicy! For the steam chicken, the chicken skin was really smooth and glossy. The meat was well cooked and juicy.

The soup was flavourful and the rice was fragrant.

Chicken rice
However, both the chicken and the rice are a quite oily. The best part of chicken rice is the chili sauce. The chili sauce was spicy enough, however i feel that it can be a little spicier and added lime juice in it will do the trick to making it better!! =) The next condiment to go with chicken rice is the ginger sauce. The ginger sauce however is way nicer than the chili sauce. The ginger sauce is not like the normal that we find at the rest of the chicken rice stores, this however is not watery and its filled with the fragrance of ginger and its a bit like a paste. Despite being so fragrant, its taste is also not overpowering, and it goes well with the chili and the rice.

The atmosphere however is more like a hawker centre, quite a warm place, as it is situated just along the road, and that its staff are not very young, thus explains the slightly slower service provided when its crowded. Trying their best to speak in English most of the time, the aunty at the cashier always wear a smile and answer to all the queries that customers have.

It may be a little bit pricy for the price of the meal for some. The meal that we had in the picture above plus 2 drinks cost $11. Wee Nam Kee not only serve chicken rice, but also other dishes and they even do takeaways, delivery service and buffet, but with extra cost applying to it.

Location of Wee Nam Kee Chicken Rice & Seafood Restaurant
Conclusion
Wee Nam Kee Hainanese Chicken Rice & Seafood Restaurant is a pretty nice place to have chicken rice of better quality, despite the oily-ness and warm environment, i recommend dropping by to try it if you're in the vicinity.

Seletar Sunset Grill and Pub!

Who said army camps does not have great food?

Foody Galore here today has brought to you... Seletar Sunset Grill and Pub!

After our arduous journey to search and locate the place, we finally found it! (Vehicles or any form of transportation is HIGHLY recommended)

The entrance of the pub looks like this..

Entrance of Sunset Grill & Pub
Their signature dish - the HOT scale buffalo wings. Why HOT scale? Because their buffalo wings are rated on a hotness scale from 1- 10. More information and pictures on the wings later.

First Dish- BBQ Pork Ribs

Yummy Pork Ribs
The Pork Ribs is.. heavenly. The BBQ sauce and the pork rib makes a very good combination. The meat is very succulent and with every bite of it, the sauce is omnipresent. What makes this dish so successful is their sauce, its neither too strong or too overcooked. The tenderness of the meat is not too soft or chewy, which most ribs are cooked that way. $29.80 for a plate of BBQ Pork Ribs.

Second Dish - Clam Chowder

Thick and Creamy Clam Chowder
The thickness of the clam chowder served is a notch higher than the rest. The ingredients used were evenly, and you can really taste the freshness of the ingredients used to make this delicious soup. For the serving above of the clam chowder costs about $8. The attractive creamy soup allows customers to slowly savour each drop of the soup before moving on to their main course.

3rd Dish - Deep Fried Button Mushroom

Deep Fried Button Mushrooms
Now who is up for side dishes? This particular side dish is one of the few favourited dishes by many customers. The deep fried mushrooms were really unique – battered button mushrooms marinated in beer! The mushrooms were crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside. In addition, this dish is not at all oily although it is deep-fried! $13.50 for a plate of deep-fried button mushrooms!

Last Dish - The Famous levelled HOT Buffalo Wings

LEVEL 10 BUFFALO WINGS!
Warning: Please do not attempt to try level 10 or higher unless you are seeking to vomit for about twenty minutes and feeling worse off on the next day.

Save the best for our last. This is the renowned buffalo wings that has brought joy and sadness to many. If you are a chili fan, you might want to test your limits against the buffalo wings. Chili padi and sambal belacan stands at only level 5.

You can sense the hotness and spiciness of the wings on your plate even before savouring them. Many customers has gulped chilled milk in order to combat with the spiciness of the wings. If you think you are a chili lover and can withstand the heat and spiciniess of these wings, go ahead. The maximum level is 35 and once you conquered it, you can etched your name at Sunset Grill & Pub's Chili Heads Hall of Fame.

Conclusion
The food was delectable to the palate and some of the dishes were really well done. However the service provided needed to be improved in terms of efficiency. Food was taking too long to be served and there were lack of staff. The location of the pub were too remote and many potential customers were unable to find it. The pricing of the dishes are medium - high, thus only attracting working adults.

Overall Rating: 4/5

Ever tried Russian Cuisine!!??

Have anyone tried Russian cuisine yet!?

Super good food at a reasonable price, why not right?

A hainanese influenced Russian Restaurant has been in Singapore for YEARS!!
Yes Years..

Set up by 9 Hainanese migrants in 1986, this restaurant is absolutely evergreen. Served with the same menu for over 20 years and decorations which is very old school, the service however is always on par and up to standard. Waiting on tables for 44 years, the famous Uncle Tan of 77 years old still does it with a smile. Dinner and lunch is served on wooden trolleys and dished out in front of you. This ensures that the food served is not cold and it sets a certain standard for the restaurant. This restaurant however is not halal certified. So apologies to our Muslim readers.

A few dishes to recommend from this restaurant.
The 1st - Grilled Escargots
The Grilled Escargots are grilled with olive oil and garlic. The moment you pick it up, the fragrance of the garlic is smelt instantly. The meat is juicy and tender, not overly-done till it becomes like chewing "rubber bands". This is priced at $28 for a dozen.

Escargots
The 2nd - Fresh Mushroom soup and Fish Solianka
The fresh mushroom soup is like our normal cream of mushroom, but with a lighter and smoother feel when placed into the mouth. There's also a generous amount of fresh mushrooms given to each bowl.

Fresh Mushroom Soup
The fish solianka is a fish clear broth with a bit of sourness. The soup is filled with chunks of fish meat and hard boil eggs. Tasting a little like tomato soup, but a little more tangy. For those who like tangy soup, this is highly recommended.

Fish Solianka
Both soups are priced at $7 per bowl. The soups are served on a wooden trolley, and then ladled straight into a bowl right in front of you.

3rd - Shashlik Pork Fillet and Lamb
Shashlik is the Russian word for kebab. This grilled skewed meat is served with sides (Russian salad or frozen boiled vegetables and fries) on an iron hot plate. The succulent piece of meat should be eaten as quickly as possible while it continues to cook on the hot plate. There's no sauce served with the meat, so as to allow customers to enjoy the natural taste of the meat. The only sauce available to customers are chili sauce and ketchup.

The Shashlik Pork Fillet is priced at $29, while the shashlik lamb is priced at $27.

Shashlik Lamb
The outlook of the restaurant is very old school and rustic, allows customers to enjoy a surreal meal with their family or their love ones. Its an ideal place for business meetings, gatherings and dates. Its gives you the feeling of relaxation with the warm lightings inside, allowing you to enjoy your meal an a slow and relaxing pace.

Giving an ambience rating of : 4.5/5

Entrance of the restaurant
Having to spend at least $30 per person at this place. So go try this restaurant out for birthdays and gathering etc.

Whats there at Old Airport Road???

Been to the hawker centre at Old Airport Road?!
It has an array of food choices - anyone who goes there will be spoilt for choice.

Today we're going to recommend 2 very different food stores in Old Airport Road Market & Food Centre.

The 1st - Sliced Bee Hoon Soup (鱼片米粉汤)
This dish is a bowl of Bee Hoon (rice noodles) cooked together with slice fish slices in a milky broth. Its a healthy and light dish recommended by the Health Promotion Board of Singapore. A locally recognised dish, a must try when in Singapore (for all foreigners visiting Singapore).

It ia a light dish, with tasty broth with fragance of sesame oil and chinese wine (hua diao jiu). Containing a substantial amount of bee hoon and thick slices of fish (fresh); its definately value for money ($4). This dish is also one of their signature dishes sold.

Sliced Fish Bee Hoon
This store also sells fish head bee hoon (鱼头米粉). So what is the name of this store you're asking... Here you go.. The name of this store is Jing Hua Fish Head/Sliced Fish Bee Hoon (金华鱼片/鱼头米粉). This particular store is very popular amongst the locals and one has to queue and wait approximately 15 minutes during peak hour sales.

Jin Hua Sliced Fish/Fish Head Bee Hoon

No 2 - Chicken Porridge
Another healthy and light dish worth trying. The porridge. A dish that consists of cooked rice with too much water.

This extremely light dish has a texture like water; where the porridge is not too over cooked with too much or too little water; Its very flow-y and it does not make you feel bored after a few spoonfuls of it. Its chicken meat is very well marinated with salt, pepper and soy sauce. The chicken meat is not small slices not a whole chunk of chicken meat. It is topped off with spring and fried onions and sesame oil (as shown in the picture) before serving.

Chicken Porridge
So which store is this you may ask. This porridge store however does not concentrate on selling porridge. It sells an array of dishes from chee cheong fun, chicken wings, dumplings, porridge and noodles. Concentrating on freshly made chee cheong fun, the store does not have a store name except its signature dish of the freshly made chee cheong fun. Located diagonally across from Jin Hua Sliced Fish/Fish Head Bee Hoon. This store's porridge is a must try.

So where's this Old Airport Road Market & Food Centre??

Hainanese Curry Rice

Has any of our readers tried a Hainanese non-spicy gooey curry rice?

Today our Foody Galore team has heard many good reviews on this particular Hainanese curry rice which is known as Scissors -Cut Curry Rice which is the chinese translation of 剪刀剪 which is pronounced as Jian Dao Jian.

Several Hainanese dishes are good, like the famous Hainan Chicken rice and the Yong Tau Foo, but this particular curry rice shouldn't be left out as well!

Few famous dishes are their slimy soft cabbage, braised pork and most importantly the curry!
Braised Pork
Soft Stewed Cabbage

The beautiful concoction of the chilli sauce and curry

Customers can either choose either to separate their dishes or to place them on their rice itself.
The rice itself is not ordinary. They are topped with the mixture of the braised gravy and curry. The combination of both does not crosses out each other but instead they are further enhanced with the taste of the spiciness of the curry and yet the thickness of the gravy.
Of course, customers can either choose to drench their rice full of gravy or not at all! All to each preference.

Several Dishes topped over the rice

Ambience and Layout of store

Conclusion
Overall the experience was sinfully good and the pricing was affordable. The price of each dish for 2 customers ranges from $1- $3. It is not overly priced for such excellent food. There will be a big crowd if you are aiming to eat in during lunch and dinner.

Overall Rating: 4.5/5
